Mitzpe Ramon, is one of the most quiet, and peaceful locations in Israel. Far away from the hustle and bustle its gargantuan crater offers kilometer upo
n kilometer of arid land just waiting to be explored. Enjoy the crystal clear night skies, free from urban pollution which offers the nature-infused cure to recharge before returning to the our daily life.
Join us on AACI’s weekend getaway while absorbing the atmosphere of Mitzpe Ramon and the Negev.
Thursday May 7th: Board buses from Central Locations in Israel and begin our journey South. Mid-day arrival Sde Boker. Tour the area with a local English speaking guide, including scenic overlooks, and an explanation of the geology, and flora and fauna of the area.
Lunch break (on your own).
Visit local Negev farms, called Havat Bodedim and learn about the local agriculture. End the tour with a short walk around the painted rocks of the Romaliya Caves.
Check into our rustic hotel, and free time to use the salt room, Hamam, and Sauna.
After our delicious buffet dinner at the hotel, board safari buses, and enter the darkness of the Machtesh to enjoy stargazing with telescopes and fascinating explanations of the night sky.
Friday May 8th: After t-filliot (optional) enjoy an Israeli breakfast. Leave the hotel for an off-road (4×4) vehicle tour of the Makhtesh Ramon crater (about 4 hours) – a panoramic view of the Makhtesh from Camel Mountain. Travel to the marble-quarrying area of Mitzpe Ramon. Travel to the sculptures promenade and descend into the crater. Hike on Carpentry Hill, then experience a fascinating ride within the Nahal Ramon riverbed to Gvanim Stream and Ein Saharonim.
Return to hotel for a light lunch.
Venture out again for a trip to the Mitzpe Ramon Visitors Center. The Center offers interactive exhibits explaining the natural processes which led to the creation of the makhtesh (which is over 40km long at its widest point). It also offers interesting information about the plant and animal life who live in what might be assumed to be a barren and inhospitable region. Aside from the makhtesh, the Mitzpe Ramon Visitor Center also serves as a museum and memorial for Ilan Ramon, Israel’s first astronaut who died in 2003 when the Shuttle Columbia disintegrated when re-entering the earth’s atmosphere.
Prepare for Shabbat and enjoy Shabbat dinner and Tefillot (optional).
Shabbat May 9th: Wake up and enjoy Coffee and Cake. After Tefillah (optional) enjoy a buffet Shabbat lunch. In the afternoon partake in a guided walk along the rim of the crater. Return to the hotel for light refreshments and free time.
Enjoy Seudah Shlishit, Havdalah and return home after Shabbat
