Locations: Odessa, Uman

Odessa. Considered the Pearl of the Black Sea, and one of its largest port cities, Odessa has always harbored a mix of cultures, especially Jewish. The city was once home to over 150,000 Jews, or one third of the total population. We explore the city and delve into its Jewish past revisiting Rabbis, Zionist leaders and famous authors who lived there.

Uman. No trip to the region would  be complete without visiting the grave of Rav Nakhman of Breslav. Right before the Yamim Noraim is a perfect time to visit Uman and be spiritually uplifted by the great stories we will hear.

Day 1-Monday Aug 6: Ben Gurion Airport – Odessa
We will meet at the airport and fly overnight to Odessa. Upon landing we will rest and breakfast at our hotel. Next we will take a tour of the city of Odessa, known as the “Pearl of the Black Sea”. We will stroll along Primorsky Avenue, feel the sea breeze and see historic buildings, including the Monument to Pushkin – the founder of modern Russian poetry.

Next stop is a visit to the famous “Catacombs”; these tunnels were used by local smugglers and later by partisans during the Second World War. We will visit the partisan museum that was established there. The museum is a monument to the partisan movement in the Odessa region during WW2.

End the evening with dinner at a kosher restaurant

Day 2-Tuesday Aug 7: Odessa
Today we continue our tour in Odessa. No trip to this city is complete without a walking tour of its splendid courtyards. We will enter yards of architectural beauty, such as an Italian courtyard and an elegant Palais-Royal. We will see the biggest art wall in Odessa and see how the locals live. In the afternoon, we will enjoy an exclusive tour of the Odessa Opera, and experience its bohemian atmosphere and that of the Ballet Theater. We will enjoy a fascinating tour, exploring the elegant and luxurious interior of one of the most beautiful Opera Houses in Europe and listen to intriguing facts and legends. After the tour we will watch a pre-dinner performance.

End the evening with dinner at a kosher restaurant.

Day 3-Wednesday Aug 8: Uman
After breakfast we will go on an early morning magical tour to Uman. We will visit the city that thousands flock to on Rosh Hashana-and pray by the grave of Rav Nakhman. We will walk the streets of the town to learn about the flourishing community that once thrived there. We will then visit the beautiful Arboretum Park Sofiyevka, a beautiful green oasis with fascinating landscape art.

Late return to Odessa for dinner at a kosher restaurant.

Day 4-Thursday Aug 9: Odessa -Tel Aviv
After breakfast we will visit the famous Pryvoz market, the largest in all of Ukraine. Alongside food products, the market sells clothing and footwear, jewelry, perfumes and more. Pryvoz market has been and remains a major attraction in the city due to its size and wide range of products sold there.

In the afternoon we will learn more about the Jewish history of the city, which at one point was one third Jewish. We will walk in the paths of Jewish luminaries, such as Ahad Ha’am, Joseph Klausner, Mendele Mocher Sforim, Ravinetsky and Bialik. It was not for nothing that the city was called “the gate to Zion” and we will pass through as many as possible of the homes of Jewish poets and Zionist figures who lived in the city, such as Jabotinsky, Tchernichovsky and Pinsker. From there we will continue to “Migdal Shorashim”, a museum that documents the Jews of Odessa, which includes thousands of exhibits and historical pictures about the people and life of the community.

Enjoy our last dinner in Odessa, and drive to airport for flight back to Tel Aviv.
